How Much Does It Cost to Fill a Pool in Wisconsin?

What goes into the price and what to expect when you request a quote.

If you've never ordered bulk water delivery before, you're probably wondering what it costs and how it's priced. The honest answer is that haulers quote per load based on your pool's location and volume — so there's no single number that applies to every job. But we can explain exactly what drives the cost so you know what to expect.

To give you a working number: most homeowners in Waukesha and Washington County pay $250–$500 total for a standard in-ground pool fill using bulk water delivery. A single truckload — typically 6,000 to 9,000 gallons depending on the hauler's equipment — usually runs $150–$250, with the total depending on how many loads your pool requires and how far the hauler needs to travel. Above-ground pool fills often come in under $200 for a single load. These are real-world ranges, not guarantees — request a quote for your specific address and pool size to get an accurate number.

The Main Factors That Determine Price

1. How many gallons you need

Bulk water is priced by the load, and loads run roughly 6,000–9,000 gallons depending on the truck. A smaller above-ground pool might need one load. A large in-ground pool might need three or four. The more loads, the higher the total cost — though some haulers offer a modest per-load discount when multiple loads are booked at once.

Use our pool volume calculator to estimate how many gallons your pool holds before you request a quote.

2. Distance from the water source to your property

Haulers pay for fuel and driver time. A property 5 miles from the fill station costs less to service than one 25 miles out. Rural properties in northern Washington County or far western Waukesha County may see slightly higher rates than those closer to the cities.

3. Access to your property

A tanker truck needs to get within about 150–200 feet of your fill point. If a long driveway, soft ground, or a gated entry requires extra time or a different setup, mention that upfront — most haulers can work with it, but it may factor into the quote.

4. Time of year and demand

Late May through late June is peak pool-opening season in Wisconsin. Waukesha and Washington County haulers book up fast during that window — many are scheduling 2–3 weeks out by mid-May. If you are opening a pool in Oconomowoc, Brookfield, West Bend, or Germantown during that stretch, request your delivery as early as possible. If you need water in late July or August, you will generally find more availability and faster scheduling. Off-season fills — fall top-offs, well recovery after a dry summer, cistern refills — often get same-week service.

Typical Pool Sizes and Load Estimates

Pool TypeApproximate GallonsEst. Loads Needed
Small above-ground (15 ft round)~5,000–7,000 gal1 load
Medium above-ground (24 ft round)~12,000–14,000 gal2 loads
Small in-ground (12×24)~12,000–15,000 gal2 loads
Standard in-ground (16×32)~18,000–22,000 gal3 loads
Large in-ground (20×40)~24,000–30,000 gal3–4 loads

Estimates assume average depth of 5–5.5 feet. Use the calculator for your actual dimensions.

Why Not Just Fill with Your Hose?

For homes on well water, filling a 20,000-gallon pool from a residential well can take several days, stress the pump, and risk running the well dry. The cost of hauled water is often comparable to or less than the inconvenience and potential repair costs.

For homes on municipal water, the tap cost might seem lower per gallon — but filling through your meter can trigger a sewer surcharge that significantly raises the true cost. Hauled water doesn't go through your meter.

What Isn't Included

Haulers deliver and fill. They don't typically handle:

  • Pool startup chemicals (pH, chlorine, alkalinity adjustment)
  • Equipment startup (pump priming, filter backwash, heater activation)
  • Any permits or HOA notifications your municipality might require

Startup chemicals are available at any pool supply store. Your pool service company can handle the rest if you'd rather not do it yourself.

Common Questions About Pool Fill Pricing

How much does a single truckload cost?

In the Waukesha and Washington County area, a single load of bulk water typically runs $150–$250 depending on the hauler and your distance from their fill station. Most haulers have a minimum charge that covers one full load regardless of whether your pool needs the entire volume.

Is it cheaper to fill a pool with a hose or a water truck?

For homes on well water, a truck is almost always the better financial decision once you factor in pump wear and the risk of running the well dry — a well pump replacement in Wisconsin runs $800–$2,400. For homes on municipal water, the per-gallon tap rate may look cheaper, but a large fill event can trigger a sewer surcharge that significantly changes the math. Hauled water doesn't go through your meter at all.

How far ahead do I need to book?

During peak season (late May through June), book 1–2 weeks out at minimum. Many Waukesha County haulers are fully booked by the second week of May for Memorial Day weekend fills. Outside peak season, same-week or even next-day scheduling is often available.

The Short Version

  • Pricing is per load — bigger pools cost more because they need more loads.
  • Distance from your property to the water source affects the rate.
  • Peak season (late May through June) books fast — request early.
  • Hauled water avoids sewer surcharges and well strain, which can make it competitive on total cost.
